Before your trip, ensure that your medical appointment is confirmed. Double-check the date, time, and location of your appointment to avoid any scheduling conflicts. It’s also a good idea to have the contact information for the healthcare provider in case you need to reach them during your trip.
Contact your NEMT provider to schedule your transportation. Provide them with all necessary details, including:
Make sure to book your trip well in advance to secure your preferred time and ensure that all your needs can be accommodated.
Gather all required documents for your trip, including:
Having these documents ready will help streamline the process and avoid any last-minute hassles.
Prepare a small bag with essential items you might need during your trip, such as:
Choose comfortable clothing and shoes for your trip. If you need to wear specific attire for your medical appointment, make sure it’s easy to change into or wear layers for convenience.
If you need assistance during your trip, such as help with getting in and out of the vehicle, inform your NEMT provider in advance. Their drivers are trained to provide support, but clear communication about your needs will ensure they are prepared to assist you appropriately.
Familiarize yourself with the route to your destination. While your NEMT provider will handle the navigation, knowing the general route can help you feel more comfortable and confident during your journey.
The day before your trip, confirm the pickup details with your NEMT provider. Verify the pickup time, location, and any special instructions to ensure there are no misunderstandings.
Inform your healthcare provider that you will be using NEMT services. They may have additional instructions or requirements for your trip, especially if you have specific medical needs.
On the day of your trip, try to stay relaxed and informed. Keep your phone charged and with you in case you need to contact your NEMT provider or healthcare provider. Arrive at your pickup location a few minutes early to avoid any delays.
This covers transportation for routine medical appointments, such as doctor's visits, dentist appointments, or trips to the pharmacy.
To qualify for NEMT, individuals must be Medicaid beneficiaries and have no other means of transportation to their medical appointments.

To ensure a senior loved one travels comfortably, focus on planning, accessibility, and comfort. This includes things like pre-trip doctor clearance, packing essentials like medications and comfortable clothing, and choosing accessible transportation and accommodations. Consider involving a travel companion or caregiver to assist with logistics and personal care needs.
